"Flush Wisely: What Goes Down and What Should Stay Up"

Your toilet may seem like a magical portal for discarding items, but not everything belongs there. Flushing certain items down the toilet can cause clogs, damage plumbing systems, and harm the environment. Knowing what you can and cannot flush is key to maintaining a healthy and functional plumbing system.

What You CAN Flush:

  • Toilet Paper: Specifically designed to disintegrate quickly, making it safe for flushing.

  • Human Waste: Only human waste and toilet paper should go down the toilet.

  • Septic-Safe Products: Some products, like those labeled septic-safe, can be flushed without harming the system.

What You CANNOT Flush:

  • Wet Wipes: Even if labeled as "flushable," wet wipes do not break down easily and can cause blockages.

  • Feminine Hygiene Products: Tampons, pads, and liners should never be flushed as they expand and cause clogs.

  • Paper Towels and Tissues: These items don’t disintegrate quickly like toilet paper and can lead to blockages.

  • Cotton Swabs and Dental Floss: They can tangle in the pipes and cause blockages.

  • Medication: Flushing medications can contaminate water supplies, so proper disposal is crucial.

  • Grease and Oils: Pouring grease or cooking oils down the drain can solidify and clog pipes.

  • Avoid Costly Repairs: Flushing the wrong items can result in plumbing issues, leading to costly repairs.

  • Protect the Environment: Certain items harm aquatic life when they end up in water systems.

  • Maintain Septic Systems: Proper disposal ensures septic systems operate efficiently and last longer.
